It is with deep sadness that NEFAR has learned of the death of long-time member George A. Barnes.
Mr. Barnes, who was 85 years old, passed away on December 20, 2024. His celebration of life occurred on January 4, at St. Paul AME Church, where he was an attendee for many years. He was laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery.
A NEFAR member for 44 years, Mr. Barnes was the owner of George Barnes Realty on the north side of Jacksonville. During his long career he served as a mediator ombudsman for NEFAR, a member of the Consolidated City of Jacksonville Planning Commission, a committee chairman of Boy Scouts of America, and president of both the FLA/Jax Club and the Northwest Council of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce.
Throughout his life, Mr. Barnes was honored for his community service. As a REALTOR®, he received NEFAR’s Living Legend Award. Within the community, he was recognized with the Morris Manor Tenant Association Managing Agent Award, the Afro American Community Awareness Award for Outstanding Leadership in Business, as well as many other recognitions for his dedication to service.
Mr. Barnes was a graduate of New Stanton Senior High School and Edward Waters College. A lifelong resident of Jacksonville, he was a certified property manager, real estate broker, buyers’ representative, and held several real estate designations including GRI, ABR, ABRM, and CRB. Additionally, he worked at the Florida Publishing Company, and was vice president of Carver Homes, Inc.
Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife, Deloris Chapman Barnes, and his four children, three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
