At Home With Diversity

Transcend cultural barriers

The REALTOR® commitment to diversity and equality is perhaps the strongest in real estate, going even further than the federal Fair Housing Act. At Home With Diversity® (AHWD) is a certification program designed teach REALTORS® how to negotiate cultural barriers within the rapidly changing real estate industry. The class helps REALTORS® develop diversity sensitivity and a better understanding of how U.S. fair housing laws impact their real estate business. By taking the class, REALTORS® are better able to develop professional guidelines for working with people in an increasingly multicultural real estate marketplace.

Since 1998, the At Home With Diversity program has prepared more than 20,000 REALTORS® to work effectively with an increasingly diverse pool of homebuyers.

At Home With Diversity strives to instill in students a better understanding of:

  • The subtleties of U.S. fair housing laws
  • Business etiquette for specific cultures
  • Interactions with international clientele

Specifically, the course teaches students how to assess and understand attributes of diversity in local markets and their impact on the real estate industry. It assists REALTORS® in developing basic competencies so they may earn the confidence of buyers and sellers regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, handicaps, familial status, or national origin. The course will also help students build a business plan that minimizes risk and successfully serves all types of clients.

After successfully completing the course, REALTORS® are eligible to apply for the official AHWD certification, which shows they have the expertise to work successfully in a rapidly changing multicultural market.

  • Take the AHWD course and pass the final exam, if required
  • Be an active NAR member in good standing
  • Pay the AHWD application fee

Those who earn the AHWD certification receive a Certificate of Achievement; updated education records on and NRDS directory listings; a congratulatory letter from the National Association of REALTORS®; and exclusive access to At Home With Diversity® marketing tools and resources. There are also networking and referral opportunities in the official At Home With Diversity® Certification Holders Facebook group.
