REALTOR Party cheers as Florida Governor vetoes vacation rental legislation

Veto SB 280 was a success!

The REALTOR Party once again felt that sweet feeling of success as Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the veto of SB 280 – Vacation Rentals June 27. A priority of Florida Realtors, the state association launched a Call-For-Action to all its members asking them to call or write to the governor’s office requesting the veto shortly after the close of the 2024 Legislative session. With his veto the governor protects the property rights of those who wish to rent their homes on a short-term basis, safeguards the Florida economy, and ensures Florida’s tourism industry remains strong.

The bill, which narrowly passed in both the Florida House and Senate, contained significant concerns highlighted by the Florida Realtors public policy team. Even lawmakers were skeptical that this was the best policy.

While REALTORS’ generally agree that some form or regulation of short-term rentals is necessary, concerns with the bill included provisions of SB 280 that were excessive, leading to:

  • “Taxing” short-term rental owners through unlimited fees
  • Suspending and revoking vacation rental registrations using undefined violations
  • Forcing short-term rental owners to appeal disciplinary actions through the courts

With the Call-For-Action, REALTORS asked the governor to veto the bill and allow stakeholders more time to work on solutions. REALTORS from Florida including many from NEFAR stepped up and sent thousands of emails and calls to the governor’s office. On June 27, it was apparent their voice was heard! This is proof that the voice of our REALTOR members is strong, loud and proud!
