HEALTHY MARKETPLACE
There have been recent reports detailing dangerous activity in our real estate marketplace. Ensuring a Healthy Marketplace starts with prioritizing the safety of our realMLS Customers and the consumers they serve.
Some examples of unsafe behavior we have seen:
1. Unaccompanied buyers walking into listed properties unannounced. A property being listed does not automatically give permission to customers or consumers. The proper channels to request a showing and access a property must be followed.
2. Vacant land transactions nearly closing unbeknownst to the actual owner. This is a type of fraud you can avoid by making sure any person claiming to be the property owner is the true owner. You can do so by requesting multiple forms of verification, proof of ownership or a face-to-face meeting, even virtually.
3. Listing agents publishing gate codes in the MLS Private Remarks field. Access codes should never be entered into remarks. Do NOT put gate codes anywhere in the MLS, as this results in an immediate $200 fine.
4. Not knowing who you’re working with. The state association provides Forewarn to safely verify prospects. Activate your Forewarn subscription at floridarealtors.org/tool-research/forewarn. It’s perfectly fine to be extra cautious and ask questions. Prioritizing safety is essential for maintaining a Healthy Marketplace!
