NEFAR’s Annual Fall Business Meeting, held on September 20 at the Marriott Jacksonville, brought together nearly 200 members for a memorable and inspiring afternoon. Attendees enjoyed a hot buffet lunch while catching up with colleagues before diving into a powerful agenda of updates, recognition, and a deeply moving keynote presentation by Jake Olson.
Jake Olson, the first-ever completely blind college football player, delivered a stirring keynote address that left a lasting impression on everyone in the room. Olson, who lost his sight at age 12 due to childhood cancer, shared his incredible journey of resilience, faith, and gratitude. From playing football at USC to becoming an avid golfer, Olson’s story is one of unwavering perseverance and triumph over adversity.
Key takeaways from Olson’s speech included:
- “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
- “Every setback is a setup waiting to happen.”
- “Live by faith, not by sight. If you can’t see the way God makes things work, then you are the blind one.”
- “Where there is a will, there’s a way! The will comes first, then you find the way.”
- “Gratitude is the most important thing in life. Don’t let sadness or anger blind you to the blessings you have.”
Many in the audience were visibly moved, especially after watching Olson’s feature on ESPN’s 30 for 30, which highlighted his football career at USC. His message of gratitude, even in the face of overwhelming challenges, resonated deeply with the audience and sparked heartfelt conversations throughout the event.
NEFAR President Rory Dubin delivered important updates on the association’s ongoing efforts, while the incoming leadership for 2025 was recognized, paving the way for another successful year. Trish Kapustka from Old Arlington Inc. provided a brief update on the upcoming Arlington Mod & More Home Tour and Symposium, happening on October 12-13.
In addition to the keynote and updates, NEFAR also celebrated the winners of its inaugural Trash Challenge, recognizing members who went above and beyond in collecting trash across Northeast Florida. Taylor Swagel claimed first place with 200 buckets collected, followed by Craig Van Brocklin with 81 buckets, and Koi-Marie Davis with 40.
NEFAR’s EDGE Professional Society welcomed two new inductees: Donielle Wagner of Coldwell Banker Vanguard Realty and Tiamerra Serrant of True Guidance Realty, both of whom exemplify professionalism and leadership in the real estate industry.
A particularly sentimental moment came when NEFAR staff member Debbie Dermody was honored for her 27 years of service as the Beaches office manager. Debbie, who will retire on September 30, has been a pillar of the association, known for her dedication, warmth, and tireless support. She is deeply respected by both colleagues and members alike, and her absence will be felt across the organization.
The event was a resounding success, filled with inspiration, reflection, and celebration of NEFAR’s vibrant community.
